ICT 2023-2024


Technology is an integral part of everyday life.  At Gilbrook Primary School, we prepare our children for a future in the modern technological society in which they live. We aim to promote and develop a positive attitude to ICT,
encouraging the children to be independent and take ownership of their learning.


Children are given opportunities throughout the year, for example Safer Internet day, to experience and be made aware of the risks online and how to stay safe.
Children get weekly access to our stand alone ICT suite. It is during these lessons that skills are taught using Kapow Primary computing scheme which is built around the computing national curriculum. This is further supported through our three year rolling topic based curriculum - Cornerstones. Through these topics children gain a greater understanding and opportunities to use the skills they have learnt.  The topics are checked to ensure that all the objectives of the National Curriculum have been met and how well engaged the children have been.


Aspects of Online Safety through the PSHE curriculum are taught.  Every class has access to a range of ICT equipment including laptops, iPads and an Interactive Whiteboard. We encourage staff to use these devices to
incorporate technology throughout the wider curriculum to research, create and present writing in a variety of ways.


Each year the Subject Leader chooses Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), which are a set of sequential developmental skills. They form a focus for the leader to assess progress through our assessment program Target Tracker. This is done through staff discussions and book scrutinies.

The National Curriculum objectives we aim to achieve are:

KS1

  • Understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions.
  • Create and debug simple programs.
  • Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs.
  • Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content.
  • Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school.
  • Use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.

 

KS2

  • Design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts.
  • Use sequence, selection and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of output and input.
  • Use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs.
  • Understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the world wide web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration.
  • Use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked and be discerning in evaluating digital content.
  • Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting,
    analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information.
  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.
