Physical Education

Physical Education develops physical competence and confidence, and the ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It promotes physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical Education provides opportunities to be creative, competitive, and to meet challenges as individuals, in groups and in teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles.

Outdoor Education

Our aim at Gilbrook is to use the outdoors to enhance and enrich our children’s learning experience.  We believe that progressive outdoor learning experiences are best delivered through a combination of school based outdoor learning, class trips linked to our topics and also through camping/adventure expeditions.

At Gilbrook we know that learning outdoors can be enjoyable, creative, challenging and adventurous.  It helps develop positive relationships with others through team building and co-operative play.  This allows children to learn by experience and to grow as confident and responsible people who will value and appreciate our landscapes, countryside, wildlife and natural heritage.

Gilbrook School Farm

At Gilbrook we feel it is highly important for the children to play a major role in the running of our school farm. It is our aim for them to develop an ownership for the animals and therefore build a sense of responsibility for their welfare, health and happiness.

The children have been involved in the development of our farm from the very beginning, this has involved:

  • School trips to farmers markets to purchase animals
  • Showing products at the Cheshire Show
  • Buying materials for animal housing and enclosures
  • Building pens, shelters, bird boxes and feeders
  • Incubating/hatching eggs/caring for chicks
  • Cleaning cages
  • Collecting and selling eggs
  • Feeding, watering and exercising animals
  • Improving our animals habitats through design projects
  • Planting trees and vegetables
  • Up-cycling unwanted items and materials

These opportunities are available to all pupils and classes are invited to take part in outdoor education projects linked to their topics every Friday during term time.

Physical Education

At Gilbrook a high priority is attached to social skills, teamwork, good sporting behaviour and confidence building. P.E is a subject where the very issues that brought the child into special education can be addressed in a positive and constructive manner.

The P.E curriculum at Gilbrook School will provide opportunities for each child to increase their self-confidence and develop positive attitudes through managing themselves in a variety of challenging, but safe situations. This in turn will lay down the foundations for:

  1. purposeful use of their leisure time in the future
  2. the development of a favourable self-image
  3. the promotion of social relationships

It is through P.E that a child may meet with the necessary experiences to develop basic movements, personal qualities, attitudes and skills to lead to a positive and fulfilled life.

Through extra-curricular activities and taking part in schemes run by community groups, outdoor education establishments and local authority organisations, we aim to forge links between school and its community.

Physical Education should involve pupils in the continuous process of planning, performing and evaluating. This applies to all areas of activity.

At Gilbrook we aim to:-

  • develop pupils communication
  • maintain and increase physical mobility and flexibility
  • enable each child to experience a sense of achievement through physical activity
  • promote positive attitudes towards health, hygiene and fitness
  • foster an awareness and knowledge of safe practice in physical activities
  • use a variety of resources and equipment in a safe and suitable manner
  • contribute to the physical development of each child
  • help each child to learn how to co-operate with others and to work as a member of a group
  • develop the appreciation of the concepts of fair play, honest competition and good sportsmanship.
  • help each child with not always winning
  • develop the ability to plan a range of movement sequences, organise equipment and apparatus, design and apply rules.
  • improve observational skills and the ability to assess their participation in the lesson
  • understand the importance of warm up and cool down before and after exercise
  • understand the effect of exercise on the body
  • sustain energetic activity over appropriate periods of time in a range of physical activities
  • provide equal opportunities for all children
