World Book Day - Optional Dress up - NO Football Kits/tracksuits Thursday 5th March is World Book Day. To celebrate, we will be doing lots of book themed activities throughout the day and taking time out to read our favourite stories. If your child would like to dress up they may come to school as a book character. We appreciate that not all of our children like to dress up. Therefore this is completely optional. If your child does not want to come as a book character they should wear school uniform as normal, pupils are not allowed to wear football kits or tracksuits. We will look forward to seeing some inventive costumes on the day and may even have a few prizes to give out too! Many Thanks, Mrs Chapman-Roberts

We are working on becoming Hedgehog Heroes!

6th Mar 2025
At Gilbrook we are passionate about out environment. Whilst we take care of a large number of domesticated farm & pet animals, we also believe that taking care of our more vulnerable native wildlife is of paramount importance. This is to not only for their welfare but also ties in with our holistic approach to nature and our environment.

By working towards becoming a Hedgehog Friendly School we are wanting to promote the welfare of hedgehogs by developing an environment that is not only safe for them but also sustainable for their future.

Our Hedgehog Ambassadors are very passionate about wanting to, in their own words, 'help the hedgehogs habitat by creating a safe environment free of litter and dangers to the local wildlife'. They talked about wanting to 'ensure we keep hedgehogs for a longtime' so that they are 'no longer in danger of becoming extinct'.

Some intersting Hedgehog facts:

  • Hedgehogs are in danger of becoming extinct and when they are gone they are gone for good.
  • Our native hedgehog is the West European Hedgehog.
  • Hedgehogs love foraging for juicy bugs and grubs but we can help them by putting out meaty cat/dog food and a shallow bowl of water. However NEVER feed them bread or milk as they are lactose intolerant and it will make them poorly.
  • Hedgehogs are nocturnal and so are active at night. If they are out and about during the day it generally means they are poorly. If you are worried about a hedgehog, please contact the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801.
