Hi Everyone,

Hope you’re all well and looking forward to enjoying some summer sunshine. Whilst the children and young people (and their teachers) are excited to break up for the long six week holidays, we know that for many of us Parents/Carers, the thought of trying to keep our children safe and happy can feel a little daunting.

It’s been lovely to meet up with so many of you at our regular SEND Parent and Carer drop in sessions. We’ve made our way around settings across the Borough and its been fab to be invited into so many schools and meet up with you. The SEND information sessions are open to all SEND Parents and Carers (not just those with children and young people attending that school).

If you fancy coming along to one, we’d love to see you. The next few events are:

  • Wednesday 12th July 9-11am at Bedford Drive Primary
  • Wednesday 13th September 9-11am at New Brighton Primary and
  • Wednesday 18th October 4-6pm at Ridgeway High School

When we’ve spoken with Parents and Carers it became clear that you might like a SEND SUMMER SNAPSHOT to help you manage the summer holidays. With the help of our colleagues working in Health, we’ve put together a list of the SEND services in Wirral along with contact details but rather than give you an individual service update, we’ve put our focus on researching WHAT’s ON this summer. Our SEND Youth Engagement Poppy has found lots to share with you and we hope you’ll find it helpful. Maybe try some new activities? Meet some new friends along the way?

They aim to be the voice of parents and to contribute to the improvement of education, healthcare and social care services. PCPW hold events to gather your views and to provide you with information on SEND.

Are you a Parent or Carer?

  • Are you a parent or Carer of Wirral children and young people with SEND aged 0-25?
  • Do you have experience to share, need information and/ or want to be able to participate in project to provide feedback on services?

Children’s Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) service

The children’s speech and language therapy team continue to offer a broad range of support for children with speech, language, and communication needs.

The team offer a blended approach to appointments.  Virtual appointments via telephone or video are offered along with face-to-face appointments if we believe that face-to-face is more appropriate for clinical reasons. There continues to be many benefits to virtual consultations and teachers/teaching assistants/parents/carers can join the call which enables them to contribute and learn from the session.

Our trust website continues to be updated with helpful videos and links for supporting children and young people with speech, language, and communication difficulties.  Please look at https://www.wchc.nhs.uk/services/childrens-speech-language-therapy/

We continue to deliver online bitesize sessions for Parents and Carers covering topics such as choices and consequences, managing anger and keeping children safe in the digital age. We also deliver “Who’s in charge ?” which is an 8 week programme for parents/ carers who feel threatened, hurt or intimidated by their child .The programme aims to :

Eureka! Science + Discovery

Eureka! Science + Discovery is designed for children and young people up to 14 years to discover how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) influence and shape their lives. By connecting every day with the extraordinary, we ignite curiosities and present possibilities.

Bodies - Ever walked through a pair of lungs, or seen a supersized brain? What would happen if you turned a body inside out? (spoiler: it’s messy). Your body is unique, one of a kind – test it, embellish it, look after it.

Homes - Think differently about the everyday. What is it for, why is it made like that, how does it work, and would I do it differently? What makes a home, and what makes your home yours?

Nature - What does our environment teach us about ourselves, our purpose, and our connections to each other? Can nature inspire new ways of living and provide solutions to the big challenges we all face?

Make Create - A space dedicated to helping you get your MAKE on. Design, tinker, make and create: The clues are in the name.

The Burrow

- A playful and interactive space with objects, activities and play areas themed around local nature and our environment (there’s even an adorable Wood Mouse nest with a slide). There are lots of surprises to discover and characters to make friends with.

- The Burrow is suitable for the under 7s. All children must be accompanied and supervised by a person aged 15 or over. Children over 7 with special educational needs are also welcome if accompanied by a carer.

Knowsley Safari Park

Visitors to Knowsley Safari will be able to create Jurassic memories this summer as they encounter huge life-like dinosaurs during an exciting six-week Dinosaur takeover, from Saturday 22 July until Sunday 3 September 2023 – and it’s all included in the regular admission price.

The animated puppets roar, blink and move just like real dinosaurs, making face-to-face encounters a truly wild experience.

Guests will meet Bruce, a six-metre-long T-Rex and get up close to huge herbivore Betsy, a giant walking Triceratops – at nearly five meters long she’ll be sure to make a huge impact on guests young and old.

Guests will also be able to experience the Safari’s regular fun attractions, including the UK’s longest Safari Drive, where White Rhino, African Lions and Bactrian Camels roam, plus baboons, Iberian Wolves and European Bison, as well as giraffes, meerkats, and the Tiger Trail on the Foot Safari.

Odeon Bromborough

AUTISM AND SENSORY DIFFICULTIES

Specially adapted screenings

We’re delighted to host special autism friendly screenings one Sunday morning each month at over 90 cinemas across the UK and ROI.

At our autism friendly screenings, we

  • Keep the house lights on throughout the film
  • Lower the audio volume
  • Remove the advertisements and trailers before the film
  • Open the cinema doors early so guests have time to get used to the surroundings

How to find autism friendly screenings

To find out about autism friendly screenings at your local cinema, simply select the 'Autism friendly' filter when looking for films and showtimes at your cinema.

If no performances are displayed, there may not be any autism-friendly screenings that week. If that's the case, please contact our Disability and Accessibility Helpline who will be able to help you further. Or speak to one of the team at the cinema.

You can also visit the Accessible Screenings website to find full listings of suitable performances at ODEON and other cinemas.

More inclusive cinema

We're proud to say that we were the first cinema chain to partner with Dimensions (a not-for-profit organisation providing support services for people with learning disabilities) to offer nationwide autism friendly screenings.

Our hope is that, as guests with sensory difficulties become more familiar with the cinema environment, at some point they'll feel comfortable with attending standard screenings.
